12: Shap to Orton - & more rain and wind

More rain - and wind....
Apparently the UK is experiencing the end of hurricane Katrina? who has blown in from the US bringing unseasonal weather...  Locals are very doom and gloom about how wet and windy it is (yes, it is VERY wet and windy) and Mandy is now convinced she is about to be blown to the New Hebrides in a cyclone!

So after the obligitory hot breakfast, on with the wet weather gear again, and off we set through the tiny village of Shap and then turn on through farmland.  Unfortunately through a paddock of mooing cows which sent Pheebs into a state of high anxiety - she certainly picked up the pace through that field!  There was one bit where we had to get quite close to the cows in a particularly muddy (read ankle deep sludgy cow shitty mud) patch & I found myself a shielding Pheebs from the cows with Joe waving his walking stick deterring them from coming closer - 5 throught it was funny - 1 was terrified!

Only a short walk today across lovely heather covered rolling hills - would have been beautiful apart from the rain and howling wind.  Some nice patches of pine forrest and apparently we walked past Robin Hoods Grave but it was unmarked and we missed it.

Joe & I are staying at Scar Side Farm about 15 minutes before Orton and the others are in another village past Orton, so we part and head to our respective lodgings.  We have a lovely room and hosts (Dave & ?) are very nice.  Joe heads into Orton (catches up with the others who are still at the pub waiting for their transfer while I read / blog.  Really nice home cooked dinner at the farm.  Kind of odd having our tight knit group separated but also nice to have some time by ourselves, though we are with the other 5 staying here - all 'friends' we've met along the walk.
